I’ll put it in my mouth if it turns the body on
Make me feel good—perhaps the internal cry of us all, when pleasure is on the table, literally. But: make me feel how good? And where? Only in the mouth?
Enter the hyperpalatable. The big oral¹. Love-bombing. The overpromise of high-value nourishment, incoming²˒³. The hot, wet kiss. Eyes roll back to see the neocortex lit up as we drown in a small ocean of saliva.
But then—what? That’s it. The hyperpalatable won’t go down on us. It doesn’t speak body language. Where’s the rest of the pleasure? The ghosting. The phantom. And not before wrecking the room. Insulin bucketing, biome starved, low-grade inflamed—like a house fire with no alarm⁴˒⁵. Wrecking, like a Korean boar set loose in an antique store—kicking, squealing, smashing porcelain.
The oro-sensory high: mouth-felt, exclusively². Epicurus’s aponia—pleasure: the absence of pain—left unrealised. Energy spikes. A quick flash, but no flame.
Now enter body-on food. Whole. Entire. The parasympathetic system fully online⁶. The vagus hums bright. Warmth to the organs. A lithe pelvis, libido lit. Serotonin blooms from the intestines like a soft drug⁷. Short-chain fatty acids arrive—butyrate—settling onto nerves, blood-braining, extending pleasure pulses⁸˒⁹. A low-abdominal hush. Calm. The body open. Loved long. Pleasure pools low and steady—like a church bell rung high and held. Whole-body. Fully yummy¹⁰.
More devastating still: the body tells the tongue. Post-ingestive cues—microbial, metabolic, neural—drift upstream, rewriting mouth-yummy¹¹. Signals chatter up vagal lines and hormones, reorganising appetite and desire¹²˒¹³. The mouth realigns. Slows. Saliva thickens. Texture lands. Flavour opens late, spreads wider, settles itself like a canary on a velvet couch. Body-yum becomes oral yum. We like this now—maybe more, says the mouth.
And yes, it’s exacting—near forbidden—to have full-body yummy every day, writhing inside a system of moorish, fast, extractive nutrient deficiency and time depravity. And we’ll make do—eat a hot, steaming shoe if it means dinner spent in good company. But when body-happy food is on the menu—I’ll opt for it. I’m hot and ready, all of me. I’ll put it in my mouth if it turns the body on.
